Making Time To Fail In Order To Learn: John Paice on the Journey from vSphere pro to DevOps pro
“Taking a course on Kubernetes is helpful, but it’s also really helpful to just fail at it.” Failing at anything feels uncomfortable. But, as John Paice (@johnny_platform), a platform reliability engineer at DICK’s Sporting Goods points notes, failing at something can be the best way to learn it.
In this episode, Dormain talks to John about his journey from a HyperV and vSphere expert to one of the founding members of the DICK’s Sporting Goods platform engineering team. Along the way, he’s had to learn new scripting languages, get familiar with the differences between cloud providers, and strengthen his Linux know-how.

Tanzu Mission Control Adds Data Protection for Kubernetes
VMware Tanzu Mission Control recently introduced a new data protection feature. Now, with Tanzu Mission Control, cluster administrators can centrally manage data protection on their clusters across multiple environments with just a few clicks of a mouse, easily backing up and restoring their Kubernetes clusters and namespaces.
vSphere Bitfusion Now Generally Available!
vSphere Bitfusion software is now generally available to VMware customers and partners. Bitfusion uses a client/server model to enable the remote sharing of hardware accelerators such as Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). This type of capability is well suited for users running PyTorch and/or TensorFlow applications.

New features for RDS on VMware going live in August
Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) on VMware lets you deploy managed databases in on-premises VMware environments. Reserved Instances and SQL Server-Always- features for this product are going live in August! Reserved instances offer the flexibility of purchasing a one- or three-year reservation for an overall lower effective hourly usage rate, for steady, consistent workloads.
Always-On availability groups feature is a high-availability and disaster-recovery solution that provides an enterprise-level alternative to database mirroring for MS SQL Server DB engines.
