We caught up with Toronto VMUG Leader, Mike Preston, at VMware Explore to ask him how VMUG has impacted him and his career development.
Before VMUG, Mike never thought he would be able to publicly speak in front of people. Now, Mike works as a Technical Marketing Architect at Rubrik, a cloud data management and data security company where he is involved in public speaking, writing blogs, knowledge shares, and more!
“I never really spoke in front of people much. As I went to more and more meetings, the local VMUG volunteer Leader asked that I share some of my stories. I agreed and realized that it’s not that scary and I like speaking in front of people,” said Mike. “I got more involved with speaking, writing blogs, knowledge sharing and realized that there are jobs where that is what you do, like a Technical Marketing Architect. Before VMUG I never thought I would be able to speak in front of people, and now it’s what I do for a living.”
Mike has a tip for those who are interested in getting more involved in the VMUG community: just get up and tell your story! Every Leader has the opportunity to encourage members to give presentations, even if they are brief or PowerPoint free.
“The more you talk about something you have struggled with or something you have fixed; the easier public speaking is going to be. You just have to get up there and try! VMUG wants to see you succeed.”
